EU’s New Cardiovascular Action Plan Targets Prevention and Early Detection

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.12.10.

The European Cardiovascular Action Plan, adopted by the EU Council, is set to transform the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Hungary played a significant role in developing this plan during its EU Presidency.

The plan emphasizes the importance of primary and secondary prevention, early detection, and the optimization of treatment and rehabilitation. The European Commission is tasked with ensuring adequate funding and taking comprehensive action to tackle cardiovascular health.

The plan calls for supporting evidence-based prevention, promoting innovative treatments, and integrating digital health tools for improved data collection and research.

This focus aims to reduce the impact of cardiovascular diseases, causing more than 1.7 million deaths annually, costing the EU economy EUR 282B.

A key aspect of the plan is expanding cardiovascular risk factor screening programs. Member States are encouraged to increase access to screenings and address the socio-economic and environmental factors that affect cardiovascular health.

These measures are essential to improve early detection and ensure patients receive tailored therapies.

Béla Merkely, rector of Semmelweis University, emphasized that this policy recommendation, which was adopted in less than six months, is a significant achievement for Hungary. It places cardiovascular disease prevention back on the EU agenda and offers a better chance to reduce risk factors, improve early detection, and increase life expectancy.

This initiative is poised to bring long-term health benefits to the European population.
