“They have arrived and are serving the peace of the Hungarian people: new Leopard 2A7HU tanks are in Hungary’s service! Our constantly arriving high-tech equipment continues to build our deterrent power, wrote Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky on his social networking site on December 4.
The most modern military equipment ensures Hungary’s defense: the number of Leopard 2A7HU tanks has increased to thirty, reports Honvedelem.hu.
The Leopard 2A7HU is the Hungarian version of the German Leopard 2A7+, renowned for its advanced technology and capabilities.
These tanks feature high accuracy, a modernized, modular turret armor design, and can be equipped with additional active protection systems, offering enhanced safety and performance (protection against incendiary liquids such as Molotov cocktails or napalm).
The armored body of the vehicle is 7.7 meters long, and with the gun forward, the length of the tank is 10.97 meters. The width without additional armor is 3.76 meters and the height is 3.03 meters. Its firepower is provided by an L55A1 type Rheinmetall tank gun with a length of L55 gauge and a 120 millimeter gauge, allowing accurate firing from a range of up to 5,000 meters. The tank is also equipped with a 7.62 millimeter parallel-mounted machine gun, a 12.7 millimeter remotely operated machine gun, and 16.76 millimeter smoke grenade launchers capable of firing fragmentation grenades.
The acquisition of these state-of-the-art tanks, combined with domestic training and factory training in Germany, aims to strengthen the country’s military readiness.
By 2028, Hungary expects to receive a total of 44 high-tech military vehicles, marking a significant step in its defense modernization efforts.
The country’s defense modernization extends beyond the Leopard 2A7HU tanks. The Hungarian Defense Forces are also integrating advanced Gidrán combat vehicles and Airbus H225M helicopters equipped with the HForce weapon system. This comprehensive upgrade strengthens both ground and air capabilities, reflecting a strategic commitment to building a fully modernized and versatile military force.
